How to Deal with Insomnia
November 28, 2016
Insomnia is the consistent inability to fall or stay asleep. It can be caused by various factors such as anxiety, poor sleep habits, and chronic conditions such as pain and sleep apnea. Symptoms of the disorder may include irritability, headache, and lack of concentration.
Over- the -counter (OTC) Products such as Unisom, Zzzquil and Simply Sleep contain the antihistamine diphenhydramine. They are nonhabit- forming, may help increase sleep. Diphenhydramine may cause dry mouth, dry eyes or constipation. Prescription medications such as Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone), and Sonata (zaleplon) relax the body
and should be taken immediately before sleep. Extra precaution must be taken not to operate a vehicle or other heavy machinery while on these medications because they can affect thinking and judgement. Some common side effects are sluggishness, dizziness, and vivid dreams.
